In Douglas Burnet Smith's poetic sequence "The Killed," a young woman translator who has endured the siege of Sarajevo revisits, through "translations" for the killed, the trauma of having witnessed the destruction of the city, and the deaths of countless numbers of its inhabitants. The long poem that follows this sequence, "Milosevic in Paris," confronts us with "the banality of evil."
